The unripe Seed Pods of the Papaver Somniferum Species are lanced at a depth no deeper than 1mm. about 2 weeks after Petals fall, then left to dry for 24 hours until the Latex is scraped off using a handmade tool.
If the person cuts too deep, the opium will drip inside the pod, and onto the immature Seeds inside.
This is actually a common occurrence, since it takes someone with experience, and there has been no Standardized Tools for this practice (until we came along with the Somni-Claw.
So the residue will remain on any Seeds that grow to Maturity.
This explains how people can test positive for Opiates on a drug test if they consume a large enough portion of unwashed Seeds.
The “effects” of Opium is known as an analgesic and a sedative. Hence, the Latin meaning of “Somni-ferum” (Sleepy Flower)
Somni = 'Sleepy'
ferum = 'Flower'
There is a small window of time, when the Strength of the Alkaloids have reached their “Peak Potency”, after which time, it will slightly decline, but will remain within the Pod’s Membrane Walls indefinitely.
The Alkaloids are 100% Water Soluble- which is why people can add water to Dried Pods and make “Opium” Tea.
A trained eye knows when to harvest by searching for a very faint brown “Ring” which forms beneath the pod, but can easily be confused with the Ring where the Petals were once attached (shown on the page BELOW)
